🗞️Albanese Government Pledges $100 Million More in Aid to Ukraine

With the announcement of a fresh aid package worth $100 million, the Albanese government has demonstrated its unwavering support for Ukraine.Richard Marles, the deputy prime minister and minister of defence, made the package public today while visiting Ukraine, where he met Denys Shmyhal, the prime minister, and witnessed firsthand the terrible consequences of Russia's ceaseless attacks.

"I am pleased to announce that local Australian defence companies have contributed an additional $100 million towards military assistance, which includes state-of-the-art drone technology. Additionally, Australia provides short-range air defence systems and vital air-to-ground precision munitions." He stated.

"Despite facing Russia's full-scale invasion for more than two years, the people of Ukraine remain resilient. During my meeting with Prime Minister Shmyhal, I witnessed that firsthand. Australia is proud to be collaborating with our partners, including Poland, to support Ukraine's right to self-defense," he continued.

The government of Albanese has announced today:

  • $50 million for air defence systems that are short range.

  • The delivery of precision weapons from the air to the ground.

  • With Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Australia has given $880 million in military aid, bringing its total support for the country to over $1 billion.

The Deputy Prime Minister met with Lieutenant General Ivan Havryliuk, Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Defence, and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal during his visit. Additionally, he went to see firsthand how the Ukrainian Armed Forces are trained. He also had the opportunity to take a tour of the region's defence sector, which has been crucial to Ukraine's defence against Russia.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal Thanked Australia for the support.

He said “ Australia is preparing a new aid package of $100 million for #Ukraine. Half of the funds will be used for missile defence systems. More than $30 million - for drones as part of the drone coalition, and the rest of the amount - for other military needs. I thanked Defense Minister @RichardMarlesMP and all the people of Australia for their solidarity and effective assistance to Ukraine.”

While travelling abroad, Mr. Marles also stopped in Poland, where he spoke with Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, his counterpart in charge of defence and deputy prime minister, about the situation in Ukraine and its ramifications for the world.More than two years have passed since Russia invaded Ukraine. At least 10,242 civilians have reportedly died and over 19,300 have been injured, according to the UN.
