Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed today that Australia is engaged in substantive negotiations with Canada regarding a potential $6.5 billion sale of advanced defense radar technology, marking what could become one of Australia's largest defense exports in recent history.
Speaking at a press conference in Brisbane, Albanese disclosed details of "an excellent call" with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, during which the Canadian leader expressed significant interest in acquiring Australia's Jindalee Operational Radar Network technology.
"This is world leading technology. Australians are smart, we're good at innovation. We want a future made in Australia and we want to export wherever possible," Albanese stated, emphasizing the strategic economic implications of the prospective agreement.
The Jindalee Operational Radar Network, developed indigenously by Australia, represents a sophisticated over-the-horizon radar system capable of detecting air and sea targets from considerable distances, providing substantial surveillance capabilities across Australia's northern approaches.
The potential radar technology sale emerges against a backdrop of increasing international focus on defense capability enhancement and supply chain diversification. When questioned about defense supply relationships beyond traditional U.S. partnerships, Albanese positioned the Canadian discussions within Australia's broader trade diversification strategy.
"It's important that we diversify our trade relationships. That's why we've worked so hard on the ASEAN region with the work that was done on our Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040," the Prime Minister explained.
Albanese further highlighted Australia's recently restored trade relations with China, which now exceed $20 billion in exports, alongside new trade agreements with the United Arab Emirates and ongoing negotiations with European partners.
The timing of these discussions coincides with evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region and shifting trade relationships globally. When pressed whether Prime Minister Carney offered guidance on managing relations with the Trump administration, Albanese carefully avoided direct commentary on U.S.-Canada tensions.
"We spoke about our relationship between Australia and Canada. That's an important one. Obviously there are issues taking place, particularly between Canada and the United States, that I wouldn't have expected to have been happening in my lifetime," Albanese noted diplomatically.
Defense industry analysts suggest this potential deal represents not only a significant economic opportunity but also signals Australia's growing prominence as a developer and exporter of advanced defense technologies. The $6.5 billion figure would constitute approximately 1.3% of Australia's total annual exports based on current trade volumes.
The Australian government has increasingly emphasized domestic manufacturing capabilities and international defense partnerships as part of its national security and economic strategy. If finalized, this agreement would represent a substantial advancement in defense cooperation between the two Commonwealth nations.
Neither the Canadian government nor defense officials have issued formal statements regarding the negotiations at this time.
About the Jindalee Operational Radar Network
The Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) is Australia's over-the-horizon radar network, providing surveillance coverage of Australia's northern approaches. Developed by the Defence Science and Technology Organisation and BAE Systems Australia, JORN utilizes high-frequency radio waves reflected off the ionosphere to detect targets beyond conventional radar range, allowing detection of air and maritime movements up to 3,000 kilometers from Australia's coastline.
