Labor surges ahead: Albanese extends lead in latest YouGov Poll
Labor has strengthened its position ahead of the upcoming Federal election, extending its lead over the Coalition to 52.5% - 47.5% in the two-party preferred vote, according to YouGov's latest Public Data poll released today.
"The Coalition, which only in February was in a strong position to win government, is now struggling to hold onto the seats it won in 2022." - Paul Smith, YouGov Director of Public Data
The poll shows Labor's primary vote has risen by 2% to 32%, while the Coalition's primary vote has fallen to 33.5%, marking a 1.5% decrease from last week. This represents YouGov's highest two-party preferred result for Labor in 18 months, slightly surpassing their winning margin in the 2022 Federal Election.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has significantly widened his lead as preferred Prime Minister, now commanding an 11-point advantage over Opposition Leader Peter Dutton (48% to 37%). This represents Albanese's largest lead since June 2024, indicating growing voter confidence in his leadership despite his still-negative satisfaction rating of -2%.
"Dutton's backdown on his controversial work-from-home policies and public sector sackings has directly impacted his standing with voters." - YouGov analysis
Dutton's popularity continues to decline, with his net satisfaction rating plummeting to -15% - his equal lowest rating recorded. The drop coincides with widespread criticism of Coalition policies, including proposed bans on work-from-home arrangements and plans to slash 41,000 public sector jobs.
"Albanese continues to solidify his lead as preferred Prime Minister, with his satisfaction ratings showing a steady improvement." - Paul Smith, YouGov Director of Public Data
The latest figures represent a dramatic shift from just two months ago when the Coalition appeared well-positioned to reclaim government. The poll, conducted between April 4-10 with 1,505 respondents, carries an effective margin of error of 3.3%.
